Simple Mobile currently offers more than 80 phones for purchase. If you’re looking for the latest releases from Samsung and Apple, look no further. Simple Mobile sells the Samsung Galaxy S10, S10e, and S10+, as well as the iPhone XS, XR, and XS Max. They also offer Google’s flagship phones, including the Google Pixel 3a, 3, and 3 XL. They don’t sell the newest LG release, LG G8 ThinQ, or Motorola’s One Vision, but they do have a decent selection of older models.

You have the following payment options when it comes to buying a Simple Mobile phone:

    • RRP (buy it outright)
    • SmartPay’s 24-month installment plan (excellent payment history)
    • SmartPay’s 15-month installment plan (average payment history)
    • Affirm’s 6-month installment plan
    • Affirm’s 12-month installment plan
    • Affirm’s 24-month installment plan

Both SmartPay and Affirm charge interest on devices purchased through their third-party financing programs. Interest rates vary, but you could wind up paying an extra several hundred dollars beyond the retail price of your smartphone at the end of your payment term.

Before you commit to Simple Mobile, you may want to consider buying a phone through a different carrier that doesn’t charge interest, like Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Google Fi, or Consumer Cellular.

How to Buy a Simple Mobile Phone

Buying it Outright

Paying for your new Simple Mobile phone upfront is the best way to save money in the long run, since they charge varying interest rates on their monthly payment plans. Some Simple Mobile smartphones are as cheap as $50, but if you’re someone who’s in the market for a flagship phone (such as the Samsung Galaxy S10+ or the iPhone XS), it may not be plausible to purchase it upfront.

If you do choose to forego monthly payments and buy your device outright, simply add it to your cart then select the service plan you prefer and continue to the checkout screen.

Third-Party Financing

Simple Mobile partners with both Affirm and SmartPay to offer you five different device installment options.

SmartPay offers a 24-month financing plan for those with excellent payment history and a 15-month financing plan for those with average payment history. Both installment options charge you interest, although the 15-month payment plan charges you far more—so much so that you may wind up paying several hundred dollars more than the device’s retail price. For instance, the iPhone XS Max costs $1,100 without interest, but with the 15-month option, you wind up paying $2,006. That’s nearly double the RRP of the device and certainly not worth it.

The 15-month payment option through SmartPay will cost you the most money in the long run.

Since it’s not clear what qualifies as “excellent” or “average” payment history, it would be in your best interest to choose “excellent” if you’re dead set on buying your smartphone on a payment plan through SmartPay. They don’t require a credit check for you to get started so there’s no reason that you wouldn’t be able to select that option.

In order to qualify for a SmartPay leasing plan, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a credit or debit card associated with a U.S. checking account
  • Have a Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)
  • Have a monthly income of at least $1,000 before taxes and deductions

Conversely, Affirm offers 6-month, 12-month, and 24-month installment options for their devices. They state that they charge between 0% and 30% interest, so it’s technically possible that you’re able to avoid interest altogether, although unlikely. Further, Affirm may also charge you a down payment, in addition to interest.

In short, a financing plan is certainly not the most economical way to buy a new Simple Mobile phone, but if it’s the only option for you, you will want to choose the plan with the lowest interest rate possible. The best way to do this is to apply for financing through Affirm and see what rate they give you and compare it to SmartPay’s 24-month and 15-month plans.
