Frequently Asked Questions About WLNP
Why should I port my number with LetsTalk.com?
Number porting can take three hours or longer to complete. Why spend an entire afternoon in the store when you can complete the process online from the convenience of your home or office? When you submit the request with your order, we do all the work to ensure your porting happens successfully. We will contact you if there are any problems with your port request.

Should I cancel my old service before I begin the porting process first?
No. To port your existing phone number, your current phone number must be active. Do not cancel your old service before you put in your request for WLNP. Your old service will be automatically cancelled when your port request is completed.

Can I keep my number if I am currently under contract?
If you are currently in a one or two-year contract with your current carrier and you port your number to a new carrier, you may be required to pay an early termination fee as specified by your old carrier. Contact your current carrier (click here for phone numbers) and ask what the charges would be if you were to cancel your service now. It may make economic sense to wait until your current contract expires before changing service providers.

What information do I need to have when I apply for number portability?

Can I take my number with me if I'm moving out of town?

If I'm on a share or family plan, do I qualify for WLNP?
In order to port a number, the person filling out the port request must be the account holder (the person whose Social Security Number is on the old account); authorized users cannot port a phone number. If you are an authorized user and you want to change carrier and port your number, you must contact your current carrier with the account holder and establish a separate account under your name and SSN. Once you become the account holder (the former authorized user now has an account under their own SSN), you are then eligible to take your old number to a new service provider.

Will I be able to use my old phone with my new carrier?
Since most carriers have unique equipment that only work on their own networks, you will probably have to get a new phone when you switch to a new carrier.

How long will it take to transfer my number?
Actual times may vary based on the carriers involved, however you should expect that:
- Wireless to Wireless porting will take a minimum of 3 hours.
- Landline to Wireless porting will take a minimum of 3 days.
It is important to remember that these times are estimates based on systems running smoothly. Our Customer Service team will keep you updated if we need any additional information from you or expect unusual delays.

What kind of service can I expect while my old number is being ported?
You should be aware that your phones might experience mixed service until the port-in is finalized. Mixed service means you may make calls from your new wireless phone, however incoming calls will ring to your old phone until the port-in is complete. Once the port-in is complete, service with your old carrier will shut off automatically and your new wireless phone will have full service.

Can I make emergency 911 calls while my number is being ported?
Once your new phone is activated, you can dial 911 from your new handset. However, if your port-in request has not been completed, you should give your exact location since the 911 operator will not be able to trace your number back to your new phone.

How much does WLNP cost?
There is no additional charge to take your number with you to a new carrier. If you are still under contract, early termination fees may apply. Refer to your contract for details.

It sounds so easy! What's the catch?
Your old phone carrier does not want to lose your business. In order to approve your port request, your old carrier will require the account information you enter to match their records exactly. Be sure to have your most recent wireless or landline phone bill handy when you go through our ordering & checkout process.
