Verizon’s New Share Everything Plans: What you need to know

Update: Verizon's New Share Everything plans are now available. Interest in making the switch? Here are more plan details.

This month Verizon announced a new type of plan that’s all about sharing the data. The new plans are called “Share Everything Plans” and up to 10 Verizon Wireless devices can be on the plan. That includes tablets, smartphones, Jetpack mobile hotspots, basic phones, and netbooks/notebooks. The idea is simple: Pay a monthly fee for each device on a plan and then an additional fee for the amount of data (1GB, 2GB, etc.) those devices will share a month.

The plans also include unlimited voice minutes, unlimited text, video and picture messaging for all devices on the Share Everything Plan. Plus the Mobile HotSpot feature, which is an additional fee to activate on other plans, is included as well. Just be aware that the data used with the Mobile HotSpot feature will come out of the shared data pool. If this is a feature that will be used a lot, keep that in mind when selecting a data option. Here’s the breakdown of the cost of each device on the plan:

Smartphones - $40
Basic Phone - $30
Jetpacks/USBs/Notebooks/Netbooks - $20
Tablets - $10

Here’s what data will cost:

1GB - $50
2GB - $60
4GB - $70
6GB - $80
8GB - $90
10GB - $100

To get an idea of what the monthly fee looks like, here’s an example:

2 Smartphones ($80) + 1 Tablet ($10) + 2GB of data to be shared ($60) = $150

For $150 (before monthly fees) service includes unlimited text, calls, and picture messaging, with the ability to use the Mobile HotSpot feature, and 2GB of data to be shared among all devices. Is it a great deal? It really depends on how much data you use monthly and that can be found out by looking at the monthly bill. Plus, Verizon includes a data usage meter on its devices that’s worth checking out to see how much data is actually being used by each individual device on the plan. For even more help check out this tool from Verizon.

The plans will be available on June 28th; however, there’s no requirement to switch from a family plan to a Share Everything Plan. There are no additional fees to switch to the new plan and switching also won’t extend an existing contract.

5 Phone accessories Dad will love

Dads do so much for us and often help us find solutions to our problems. Why not return the favor this Father's Day with one of these accessories for his phone? Whether your Dad loves to listen to music, spends tons of time in the great outdoors, or just loves gadgets we’ve got him covered. One of these accessories will help him get the most out of his cell phone.

Give Dad more juice

With cell phones performing more and more functions these days it’s not surprising that some have a problem staying charged all day. Is your Dad’s cell phone always running out of power at the most inopportune times? Consider getting him the Energizer Portable Charger. This pocket-friendly charger can be used with any cell phone that has a mini-USB or micro-USB (that’s what’s on most smartphones) port.

A phone case that’s as rugged as Dad

Are you more likely to find your Dad outdoors hiking, rafting, or biking? Help him keep his cell phone protected with the Grace Digital Audio Eco Extreme Rugged Case. Just about any smartphone (even iPhones and iPods) will fit comfortably in the case. Plus if the phone has a 3.5mm headset jack (most phones do) they can even listen to their favorite playlist through the case’s speaker. Since this rugged case is also waterproof it will standup to just about any outdoor activity your dad loves.

Glasses for Dads who love gadgets

There are tons of Bluetooth headsets available, but how many of them are also a pair of sunglasses? That’s the idea behind the Qi-Wear Stereo Bluetooth Sunglasses. Equipped with a built-in Bluetooth headset and dual microphones for ambient noise cancellation, these sunglasses let Dad take calls on his cell phone and listen to music when he wears them. Plus they have an Ultra-Dura anti-scratch coating that will help keep the lenses from getting scratched. These sunglasses will do more than just keep the sun out of your Dad’s eyes.

Give Dad the gift of music

Does your Dad love to use his cell phone as an MP3 player? If so, help him set his music free with the QuikCell Sphere Portable Wireless Speaker. This compact speaker plugs right into the 3.5mm headset jack on his phone so he can hear the music on his phone wherever he wants. So whether he’s in the office or in a hotel traveling for business he’ll be able to listen to the music on his phone without a headset.

This mount will help keep Dad’s hands on the wheel and not on the phone (Read more)

5 Apps for Grads

Summer is about to arrive and that means the school year is just about finished. Know someone who is graduating and getting ready to go into the world? Why not give them some helpful smartphone apps. We’ve rounded up five apps that are sure to help grads succeed.

1. There’s no place like home

For many graduates, the end of the school year means they need to find a new place to live. Depending on the area there can be tons of competition for any one rental. Help your grad stay ahead of the curve with the Trulia - Homes For Rent mobile app. Users can create personalized searches based on location, rooms, and price range. There’s also the ability to add open house times to a calendar and get alerted when new properties come on the market. When grads find a place they like they can take notes about it and even post it to Facebook to see what friends and family think of the potential spot.

2. Help Grads find a dream job

As most people in the workforce know, graduating school is just the beginning. Finding a job is an entirely new skill to learn. In today’s job market, there are loads of websites filled with new job listings. Visiting all those sites and sifting through listings daily can be exhausting. Instead, show your favorite grad how a smart mobile app such as Hire-A-Droid can do all the heavy lifting. The app is essentially a job search engine that accesses multiple job search sites in multiple countries. All the user has to do is enter the type of job wanted and let the app do the rest. If they find a search with good results, it can be saved so the lead can be followed up on later.

3. This to do list can help save money

Due dates don’t stop when school is finished. They just are required for something other than schoolwork – bills. Help grads develop good financial habits early with the Billski Bill Tracker. While there are tons of apps available for keeping track of finances, the Billski Bill Tracker takes a different approach. It just reminds users when to pay their bills. With this app grads will only have to enter the basic information: bill type, amount, date due, and when they’d like an alarm reminding them to pay it. Paying bills on time can means loads of savings in late fees.

There is a paid version of the app available for $1.00 that allows users to backup and restore data to/from the SD card and view the screen in landscape or portrait mode.

5 Apps for Mother’s Day

Not sure what to get Mom for Mother's Day this year? Well consider getting her apps that will make her life easier. You can always download one or all of the apps to your favorite Mom's phone while spending time with her during the holiday.

1. Help Mom have more fun with pictures stored on her phone

Many smartphones come with photo editing options and the ability to share them. The latest mobile app Snapbucket from Photobucket takes that functionality one step further. Not only can users make edits and add photo effects, but they can also share photos with friends on Facebook Twitter, via email, or with other PhotoBucket users. Best of all the application doesn’t alter the original image, so it’s always safely stored in the phone or on the phone's memory card.

Does your Mom still clip coupons from the newspaper? You can save her time and money by introducing her to Yowza!! Mobile Coupons. The application provides coupons to tons of nearby stores, restaurants, and activities. The app uses the smartphone’s integrated GPS to deliver nearby coupons, so just be aware it might drain the phone’s battery life. If Mom has a favorite local store, she can even set a notification to be alerted when the shop offers a new discount.

Busy Moms who enjoy making dinner, but don’t have a lot of time to research new recipes will love Recipe Search from AlltheCooks.com. The site has over 70,000 recipes including everything from appetizers and desserts to main dishes, and more. The most interesting feature in the app is the ability to find recipes based on ingredients as well as traditional recipe names. iLuv’s ArtStation Pro at CES expands a tablet’s entertainment possibilities

For many who purchase a tablet – especially a model with at least a 10-inch screen – the idea of using it to view videos is especially appealing. The trick is finding the right case or accessory to make that an easy experience. The ArtStation Pro iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tablet docks might be just the solution. The tablet clicks into place and the tablet can be rotated for viewing in horizontal or vertical mode. Once attached, the included remote control can be used to manage things like Power, Volume, Play, Next, and Previous. For those who use the tablet for some work or to check e-mail it will also work with a paired Bluetooth keyboard. Prices for the stand start at about $150.

Like the idea for a stand, but don’t have a tablet? There’s also a similar option that’s a bit more compact and works with a smartphone or even a Kindle. The MobiAir is a speaker that can be connected via Bluetooth or via the 3.5mm headset jack that can also be used to charge the device. Prices start at about $70.

Griffin’s WindowSeat 3 Handsfree shown at CES

With cell phones performing more tasks, more and more people are finding that they need a permanent spot for them in the car – especially in light of all the laws banning use of a cell phone while driving. Griffin showed off a product that could do the trick, the WindowSeat 3 Handsfree. Once the product is mounted to a windshield or dashboard, users can securely place their smartphone in the 3-point mounting bracket and then adjust it in place so that it can be seen at the right angle (think: turning it into a better position to see driving directions from a map on the phone.) The accessory works with a plethora of smartphones since it is so adjustable, though you likely will not be moving the WindowSeat 3 Handsfree accessory between multiple cars. It also comes with an auxillary audio cable so you can connect the phone to the car stereo’s Aux-in jack and use the built-in microphone for handsfree calling.

A Game with Edge: Run, Kitty, Run

Last week at the Adobe MAX conference, a new game for the iOS platform was launched called, “The Adventures of Timmy: Run, Kitty, Run.” Sure there are lots of games that launch all the time, so what makes this one so special? It has a decent concept: Young Timmy wears a cat suit to school and draws attention to himself from a girl named Kitty. Before things can progress between the two, the school bully, Mitch, kidnaps Kitty. It’s now up to Timmy and his cat suit to rescue Kitty, which he can do by going through a bunch of levels. It’s a bit reminiscent of “Super Mario Bros.” The game is actually pretty good according to a review from TouchArcade and it will work on both Mac OS and iOS products.

The interesting thing about this game is that it was built using an HTML 5 animation tool from Adobe called Edge. We all know Adobe Flash, but the fact that it’s throwing its hat in the HTML 5 game with Edge is what’s saying something. In essence, it means the next generation of the web might indeed be moving away from Flash and we just may start to see more and more web-based products built from HTML 5. To learn more about Adobe Edge check out this article from PC World. To see Edge in action, check out the game cut scenes.
